Private Rio Lagartos tour –  Las Coloradas

Do you want a relaxing day with your friends or family while enjoying the immaculate wildlife of the Yucatán peninsula? Come join us for our private Rio Lagartos tour!

Rio Lagartos Pink Flamingos

As a tiny fishing village on the north shores of the Yucatán peninsula, there is a wide variety of wildlife in the area. Its staple Rio Lagartos reserve and lagoon, is frequented for its birdwatching to see pink flamingos, egrets, and ibises. Rio Lagartos is Spanish for “Alligator River.” Crocodiles can be seen swimming throughout the lagoon, so the alligator river may not be as fitting of a name as it seems.

Rio Lagartos tour by boat

To begin the day of our Rio Lagartos tour, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cancun around 6 AM and make the 3 Hour drive to the lagoon. Our transportation is big and comfortable, giving you the opportunity to sleep along the way. We will be providing a small breakfast and a coffee stop to ensure you are peppy and ready for a fun filled day on the water.

We get you to Rio Lagartos early in the day in order to avoid the large crowds that will arrive later. Arriving early will completely change your experience! You will be able to see more wildlife without the hustle and bustle of other tourism. Your tour will begin with a three-hour private boat ride captained by an experienced and certified guide. The maximum occupancy on a private boat is around six people. Your certified guide would love to point out all the interesting tales and stories that locals know and tourist want. He will also be providing facts about the wildlife.

Pink Laguna at Rio Lagartos

You won’t be salty about our first stop along the tour: Las Coloradas. Las Coloradas houses Mexico’s second largest salt factory because salt is extracted out of the water there. Hope for a sunny day to enjoy massive, extravagant pink lagoon waters.

The lagoon is not always pink as its color depends on the sun light and also on the salt production process from the factory, that is not predictable. Swimming at Las Coloradas is strictly forbidden and can hurt your skin.

After Las Coloradas, we head to Bano Maya for you to see the authentic Mexican mud bath and we will reach an area of the lagoon with fresh water (exit of a cenote).

You will be extremely hungry after this, so we would be remiss if we didn’t take you to a local restaurant for some extraordinary fresh fish right off the water.

After lunch, we will head to las Coloradas, that time by car, to observe the salt factory and its lagoon again. And we will be back to Cancun around 4 PM.

If you would like to add two more hours to the Rio Lagartos tour, we would love to assist you in touring the Mayan ruins of Ek Balam. Also, as another option, we offer a two day tour which will go through the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Ek Balam, consisting of a one night stay in Rio Lagartos. This allows for a boat tour at night and even more crocodiles!
